Welcome to the PA-BCERF Project Website

The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factor (PA-BCERF) project is dedicated to identifying reliable scientific research to clarify known and potential relationships between breast cancer incidence, lifestyle factors, pesticides and household chemical use.


PA-BCERF project staff at Penn State University work with community cancer coalitions Cooperative Extension educators, and health clinic staff to educate mothers, children, gardeners, school administrators, restaurant owners, factory workers, farm families and many other audiences in this state-wide effort.

PA-BCERF is a research initiative of the northern regional office of the Appalachia Cancer Network (ACN), previously referred to as the Northern Appalachia Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NALIC). The concept of PA-BCERF arose through a partnership among the NALIC project, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Penn State College of Medicine, the Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health and the BCERF project at Cornell University. PA-BCERF is funded by the Heinz Family Foundation. For more information see the ACN page.
