Training Updates — Workshop October 5 - 6, 1999

The following information describes an inservice held October 5 - 6, 1999. The purpose of the inservice was to educate Cooperative Extension Agents, NALIC Coalition Members, Health Educators, and Clinicians on the relationship between breast cancer and environmental risk factor and methodologies for educating the public on breast cancer risk factors and potential strategies for reducing exposure to environmental risks of breast cancer.

Training goals:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Plan environmental risk reduction education programs.
  2. Disseminate environmental risk reduction information to community members, and
  3. Identify community partners for breast risk reduction programming.

Title: Breast Cancer Risk Factors

Session Objectives:

  1. Describe the stages of breast development during the life cycle.
  2. List known and suspected risk factors for breast cancer and explain their relationship to estrogen exposure
  3. Describe the relationship between breast development, exposure to risk factors and breast cancer.

Title: Diet & Lifestyle Strategies for Risk Factor Reduction

Session Objectives:

  1. Explain the current status of research on the relationship between lifestyle choices and breast cancer risk in the areas of diet.(fat, fruits, vegetables)
  2. Relate the simple messages for lifestyle strategies for breast cancer reduction that they can use with their clients.
  3. Utilize background materials on breast cancer risk reduction for themselves as well as simple tip sheets with strategies for diet and lifestyle risk reduction for use with clients.

Title: Pesticides and Breast Cancer

Session Objectives:

  1. Explain the basic principles of tumor biology and the genes involved in tumorigenesis.
  2. Describe the natural history of breast cancer in humans.
  3. Describe how known or suspected genes are involved in human breast cancer.
  4. Synthesize this information and relate how pesticides may alter breast cancer risk.
  5. Describe three ways environmental chemicals can affect breast cancer risk.
  6. Describe why limiting exposure to breast carcinogens is important during puberty.
  7. Describe what estrogen is and how it works through its receptor.
  8. Describe how some pesticides and other chemicals act as "environmental estrogens".
  9. Describe two reasons why cell proliferation is important in the development and growth of some breast tumors.

Title: Assessing Risk Factors and Understanding Epidemiological Studies

Session Objectives:

  1. Define the concept of risk.
  2. Explain the effect of single and multiple risk factors on adverse outcomes.
  3. Describe basic epidemiological study designs and the effect of study population characteristics on study conclusions.
  4. Relate the advantages inherent to epidemiological studies.
  5. State the problems associated with understanding epidemiological study conclusions.

Session Objectives:

  1. Identify pest control methods that reduce pesticide exposure.
  2. Describe methods/practices of reducing chemical exposure when performing household tasks.
  3. Describe opportunities to reduce chemical chemical exposure including food sources, indoor and outdoor home pesticide and chemical use, and indoor and outdoor community pesticide and chemical use.
